According to Greg Archer in his blog on the Huffington Post from December 18th, Frosty Hesson’s surfing memoir MAKING MAVERICKS, released by Zola Books in October to coincide with the release of the 20th Century Fox movie “Chasing Mavericks” starring Gerard Butler as Hesson, is one to take to heart and if you missed it in 2012 should be on your radar.  Here’s what he had to say about it and his six other picks for life post the apocalypse.

Meanwhile, the other books on the list were either released earlier in 2012 — and deserve another look — or will be released next year.

And … what’s the hot book to look out for in 2013? Read on …

The film Chasing Mavericks, which was released a few months ago and starred Gerard Butler and newcomer Jonny Weston, chronicled the unique Santa Cruz, California-based story of surf legend, the late-Jay Moriarity and his mentor Frosty Hesson. For starters, books about mentors and their protégés can be hit and miss, but here, Hesson is able to evoke the driving force behind both Moriarity’s youthful exuberance and his own work ethic, which has made the man somewhat of a legend in the surfing world. On the plus side: there are 24 color photos in the book. Eye-catching indeed.
